Down on the beach, where the tide draws and erases its own doodles, something round and orange came galumphing across the sand, holding an enormous book over its head to keep off the spray.
"Sophia! At last!" it puffed. "I'm Obooga, and I've started a MAGNIFICENT story. Listen: 'Once, a brave deep-sea explorer named Sophia sailed beneath the waves, because—'"
So Sophia zipped up the shiniest dive suit on the dock, and the story finally had a beginning... a mission to rescue Grandpa's lucky fishing hat from the bottom of the sea.
"You can't walk to the bottom of the sea," said Obooga wisely. "Believe me. I've tried. So I drew three submarines. I am TREMENDOUSLY proud of one of them, and it is not the one you think."
Obooga christened the Bubble Trouble by bonking a juice box against the hull. Tradition is tradition, even underwater. It was perfect.
"I'll handle the diving!" said Obooga, studying the controls. "Down is... this lever. Or possibly that lever. Sophia, whatever happens, do NOT touch the big blue lever with the octopus sticker on it."
The lever was very big. And very blue. And very pulled. The Bubble Trouble dove like a penguin after the last fish... down, down, spiraling past surprised jellyfish and a very unimpressed turtle... completely, wonderfully off course.
No matter which way the Bubble Trouble turned, the whispering current carried it in a great slow circle, right back to where it started. On the third loop, they noticed somebody floating in the middle of the ring in a teacup of an air bubble, reading... a very fluffy, very blue somebody.
“O whispering sea, we bring you a gift: one truly shy mermaid mustache. Please whisper back which way we should glide.” And with that extremely silly sentence, Maxalooey asked the sea. The current stopped. The current listened. Then the whole ring of water repeated the sentence in a hundred tiny whispers, giggled itself into bubbles... and where the circle had been, three glowing underwater roads stretched away into the blue.
The Bubble Trouble glided into the hold of an old, kind-looking shipwreck... the Sunken Toybox, where every beach ball, bucket, and bath toy ever lost to the waves ends up, arranged neatly on coral shelves. Obooga put a toy diving helmet on his head. It fit a teddy bear. It did not fit Obooga.
And there, on the highest shelf, placed more carefully than anything else in the whole wreck, was Grandpa's lucky fishing hat. Not lost. Curated.
"Wait. Shhh. SHHHH." Obooga froze, teddy-bear helmet and all. "Something is coming between the shelves. And I have NEVER seen anything like it in ANY story. Which means only YOU know what it looks like."

And there it swam, exactly as Sophia said: a mysterious creature
The creature wasn't scary at all. And the way it hovered beside Grandpa's lucky fishing hat... proud and gentle and a little embarrassed... told the whole story. It hadn't been stolen. It had been chosen. There's a difference, and the difference was the point.
"It's LONELY," said Sophia. "The sea is enormous, and it just wanted one voice to answer back. So it whispered to the whole ocean... and only one person answered: Sophia." Obooga nodded slowly. "Then we need a PLAN. Step one: we make sure The Creature is never that alone again. Step two... step two..."
And when it was spelled out in shells at last... Use the Bubble Trouble to carry The Creature exactly where it needs to go.... it was, Obooga declared, "the finest Step Two in the history of oceans."
The plan worked. It ALMOST worked. It worked right up until every toy in the Sunken Toybox decided to help at the same time... and the shelves came alive.

And then... the part nobody saw coming, not even Obooga: Creature's one weird thing turns out to be exactly what saves everyone
And that... the moment Creature's one weird thing turned out to be exactly what saved everyone... was how everything changed. And it gave The Creature the chance to do the one weird thing nobody expected... which turned out to be exactly what everyone needed.
Because of Sophia's plan... and the twist nobody saw coming... The Creature wasn't lonely anymore. It had a friend now. It had two. And the sea hummed about it all the way to morning.
So it ended with a parade... spray like confetti, dolphins spelling Sophia's name in flips, and the Bubble Trouble leading the whole glittering sea.
