At the edge of town, where the gardens end and the great green jungle begins, something round and orange came crashing out of the ferns, holding an enormous book over its head like an umbrella.
"Amelia! There you are!" it puffed. "I'm Obooga, and I've started a BRILLIANT story. Listen: 'Once, a brave explorer named Amelia marched into the Giggling Jungle, because—'"
So Amelia laced up the muddiest boots in the closet, and the story finally had a beginning... The jungle has gone silent. It used to giggle all night long — and three days ago, it stopped..
"The jungle only opens for the river," said Obooga wisely, marching to a little wooden dock. "So I drew three boats. I am ENORMOUSLY proud of one of them, and it is not the one you think."
Obooga christened the Green Banana by bonking a coconut against the bow. The coconut won. It was perfect anyway.
"I'll navigate!" said Obooga, unfolding a map so large it wrapped around his whole head. "It says turn left at the big rock. Or... wait. Am I holding this upside down? Amelia, do NOT let the boat pick its own way."
The boat picked its own way. The Green Banana shot down the rapids like a soap bar in a bathtub... past startled parrots, under a fallen log, through a curtain of vines... completely, wonderfully lost.
The river ended at a wall. Not a rock wall... a VINE wall, woven tight as a basket, damming the whole river shut. And sitting on top of it, reading an enormous book, was a very fluffy, very blue somebody who waved like he’d been waiting all day.
“Vines so green and vines so ticklish, kindly dance aside... make way, make way, for the mighty muddy sock, who has come here today to nap.” And with that extremely silly sentence, Maxalooey read the rhyme from the very top, new words and all. For a moment, nothing. Then every vine on the wall began to sway... then wiggle... then DANCE, until the whole wall boogied itself apart... and the river rushed through, three channels wide.
The Green Banana slid to a stop behind Tangle-Tumble Falls, in a cave lit by glowing moss. Amelia climbed out gracefully. Obooga did not. "I'm not tangled in the vines," said Obooga, who was extremely tangled in the vines. "This is just how explorers rest."
And then Amelia heard it... behind the roar of the water... the smallest, saddest sound in the world. Like a giggle that had forgotten how.
"Wait. Shhh. SHHHH." Obooga went very still (the vines helped). "Something is coming. And I have NEVER seen anything like it in ANY story. Which means only YOU know what it looks like."

And there it stood, exactly as Amelia said: a mysterious creature
The creature wasn't scary at all. And Amelia understood at once: this was the jungle's giggler. The one who started every laugh, every night. And it hadn't giggled in three whole days.
"Everyone got it WRONG," said Amelia. "They saw the one weird thing about it and ran away before they learned the truth. Nobody ever stayed long enough." "Well, WE'RE staying," declared Obooga, drawing a big circle in the dirt. "We need a PLAN. Step one: we show the whole jungle who The Creature really is. Step two... step two..."
And when it was scratched into the dirt at last... Use the one weird thing about The Creature — the thing everyone got wrong — as its greatest strength.... it was, Obooga declared, "the finest Step Two in the history of jungles."
The plan worked. It ALMOST worked. It worked right up until Tangle-Tumble Falls decided to tumble the other way... and the whole cave filled with flying spray and rainbows.

And then... the part nobody saw coming, not even Obooga: the Green Banana does something no boat has ever done before
And that... the moment the Green Banana did something no boat had ever done before... was how everything changed. And just like that, the way was open.
Because of Amelia's plan... and the twist nobody saw coming... the whole jungle finally understood The Creature. The one weird thing wasn't weird anymore. It was legendary.
So it ended quietly, the best way... a swinging hammock, heavy eyelids, and the jungle giggling itself softly to sleep.
