What Obooga is
Obooga makes child-authored books. Not a personalized book, where a child's name is dropped into a story a stranger already wrote. And not an AI story app that generates a tale at a child. A child-authored book is one the child actually writes: they make the creative decisions that shape the plot, and their name goes on the cover as the author.
Obooga himself is a big, round, sweetly incompetent monster who knows everything about stories except what happens next. That is exactly where your kid comes in.
How a book gets made
In about 20 minutes on any web browser, a child ages 6-12 rescues Obooga's unfinished story by making every creative decision: where it happens, who they meet, the creature they invent, the plan, the twist, the title. Obooga illustrates each choice, reads it back aloud, and turns it into a real illustrated book with the child's name on the byline: "Written by your kid, with Obooga."
The finished digital book is free to read and share, always. If you want to hold it, a printed hardcover of their exact story is an optional keepsake ($37, additional copies $29, US shipping). No subscription, ever.
Where AI is used, and where it is not
AI doesn't write the stories. Every story is hand-authored: every page of narrative, every choice, every illustration, and every line of character audio was created or reviewed by a human before launch. AI is used only at a few narrow, carefully guarded moments: smoothing the child's own words into a sentence, speaking their first name aloud, and drawing the one picture they describe themselves. Everything a child types passes through multiple layers of moderation first.
Safety and privacy
Parents stay in control and children stay protected. No child accounts, no ads, no messaging, no strangers. We collect a first name so the story can say it, and the story choices themselves. A parent's email is collected only if you choose to save your library. Everything a child types is moderated. Obooga is built for the amended COPPA rule: privacy-first by design, not as an afterthought.
Who makes Obooga
Obooga is made by The Obooga Team - a small, independent, parent-run studio. It's dad-built, born from making up stories at home. Our chief story officer is in 2nd grade, and sets a high bar for what counts as a good twist.
Giving
We give 20% of profits to Breakthrough T1D (formerly JDRF), the world's leading organization funding type 1 diabetes research - driving toward better treatments, prevention, and ultimately a cure.
