Obooga is built for children, so we collect as little as possible and tell you
plainly what we do with it. We treat everyone who uses the story studio as a child.
What we collect from your child
A first name, so the story can say it, and the story choices themselves. That's
the list. No child accounts, no ads, no messaging, no tracking across other sites,
and no photos, voice recordings, or location. We keep only the first word of any
name a child types, so surnames never enter a story. Everything a child types passes
through layers of moderation, which also block personal details like last names,
schools, phone numbers, and addresses. A child never has to share more than this to
use Obooga.
What we collect from you
- Email (optional): only if you choose to save your child's
books to a library shelf. We use it to send your shelf link and messages about your
own books. If you tick the box when you give it, we also send occasional Obooga news
(a few emails a year); every news email has an unsubscribe link. We never sell your
email or share it for anyone else's marketing.
- Order and gift details (only if you buy): your name, shipping
address, and email, used to print, ship, and support your order. Stripe processes
payments; we never see or store card numbers. Lulu Press receives your shipping
details only to print and deliver your book.
How AI is involved
Every story is written by people. AI is used only at narrow, guarded moments:
checking what a child types, fitting your child's own words into a sentence, speaking
their first name aloud, and drawing the one picture they describe.
Who we share data with
Only the services that make Obooga work:
- Stripe (payments) and Lulu Press (printing and shipping), for orders only.
- KnownHost, our hosting provider.
- AI providers. Our moderation services (currently Anthropic and OpenAI, some
requests through OpenRouter, and Mistral) check what a child types, including the
first name, before anything enters a story. Our picture service (Google, through
OpenRouter) receives only a description that passed moderation. ElevenLabs receives
only the first name, to speak it aloud. None of them receive your email, your
address, or anything that identifies your child's device.
- Cloudflare, which runs a quick "are you a person?" check on the story studio
(see below).
We never sell personal information, and we never share it for advertising.
Cookies, device storage, and other identifiers
We use these only to run Obooga safely, never for ads, profiles, or contacting a
child:
- On your device: small notes in your browser keep a story in
progress, remember the books made on this device, and, if you arrived through a
partner's link, remember that partner for 30 days. They stay on your device.
- Bot check: on the story studio, Cloudflare Turnstile checks
that a person, not a bot, is starting a story. Cloudflare uses technical signals
from the browser for this check only.
- IP addresses: our server uses them to stop abuse, such as too
many stories from one address in an hour. Security logs that contain IP addresses
are deleted after 30 days. To count a book's readers, we use a scrambled, one-way
form of the address that we discard each day.
- Google Analytics: only on grown-up pages (the homepage, guides,
gift, order, about, and press pages), never on the story studio or book pages.
Advertising features and cross-device signals are off, and we send no names, emails,
or story content. On the studio and book pages we count starts and finishes
ourselves, without identifiers.
How long we keep things
- Unfinished stories: deleted after 30 days.
- Finished books never saved to a shelf: deleted 30 days after creation.
- Saved books: if a book goes unopened for 11 months we email a reminder; at 12
months unopened it is deleted.
- You can permanently delete any book from your shelf at any time. Deletion is
immediate and includes its pictures and share link.
- Your email and shelf: deleted when your shelf is empty, or whenever you ask.
- Security logs with IP addresses: deleted after 30 days.
- Order records: kept as long as tax and accounting rules require.
Sharing links
Book links use long, unguessable addresses, are excluded from search engines, and
can only be read. A shared link can never be used to claim, change, or delete a book.
Your choices and rights
You can review what we hold about your child, have it deleted, and refuse any
further collection at any time. Delete books from your shelf, or write to
support@obooga.com and we will do it for you
and confirm. Unsubscribe from news with the link in any news email.
