At the edge of town, where the gardens end and the great green jungle begins, something round and orange came crashing out of the ferns, holding an enormous book over its head like an umbrella.
"Isabella! There you are!" it puffed. "I'm Obooga, and I've started a BRILLIANT story. Listen: 'Once, a brave explorer named Isabella marched into the Giggling Jungle, because—'"
So Isabella laced up the muddiest boots in the closet, and the story finally had a beginning... A letter written on a leaf floated down from the treetops: "HELP. Come quick. Bring snacks. And an umbrella.".
"The jungle only opens for the river," said Obooga wisely, marching to a little wooden dock. "So I drew three boats. I am ENORMOUSLY proud of one of them, and it is not the one you think."
Obooga christened the Green Banana by bonking a coconut against the bow. The coconut won. It was perfect anyway.
"I'll navigate!" said Obooga, unfolding a map so large it wrapped around his whole head. "It says turn left at the big rock. Or... wait. Am I holding this upside down? Isabella, do NOT let the boat pick its own way."
The boat picked its own way. The Green Banana shot down the rapids like a soap bar in a bathtub... past startled parrots, under a fallen log, through a curtain of vines... completely, wonderfully lost.
The river ended at a wall. Not a rock wall... a VINE wall, woven tight as a basket, damming the whole river shut. And sitting on top of it, reading an enormous book, was a very fluffy, very blue somebody who waved like he’d been waiting all day.
“Vines so green and vines so fancy, kindly dance aside... make way, make way, for the mighty banana-king, who has come here today to yodel.” And with that extremely silly sentence, Maxalooey read the rhyme from the very top, new words and all. For a moment, nothing. Then every vine on the wall began to sway... then wiggle... then DANCE, until the whole wall boogied itself apart... and the river rushed through, three channels wide.
The river narrowed, slowed, and delivered the Green Banana into the Overgrown City... ancient stone towers wearing moss sweaters, staircases going nowhere, and statues of creatures no one remembers. Obooga found an old flowerpot and put it on his head. "Explorer helmet," he said, incorrectly.
On the steps of the tallest ruin sat a neat little pile of leaf-letters, all addressed to Isabella, and a welcome mat woven out of ferns. Someone had been waiting a long time.
"Wait. Shhh. SHHHH." Obooga's flowerpot slipped over one eye. "Something is coming. And I have NEVER seen anything like it in ANY story. Which means only YOU know what it looks like."

And there it stood, exactly as Isabella said: a mysterious creature
The creature wasn't scary at all. It was the letter-writer... and judging by the neat stack of unsent leaf-letters beside it, it had been trying to be found for a very long time. "You came," it seemed to say. "You actually came."
"It's LONELY," said Isabella. "The jungle is enormous, and it just wanted one voice to answer back. So it called into the green... and only one person answered: Isabella." Obooga nodded slowly. "Then we need a PLAN. Step one: we make sure The Creature is never that alone again. Step two... step two..."
And when it was scratched into the dirt at last... Use the Green Banana to carry The Creature exactly where it needs to go.... it was, Obooga declared, "the finest Step Two in the history of jungles."
The plan worked. It ALMOST worked. It worked right up until a thousand years of vines all let go of the city at once... and the ancient towers began to wake up.

And then... the part nobody saw coming, not even Obooga: the Green Banana does something no boat has ever done before
And that... the moment the Green Banana did something no boat had ever done before... was how everything changed. And it gave The Creature the chance to do the one weird thing nobody expected... which turned out to be exactly what everyone needed.
Because of Isabella's plan... and the twist nobody saw coming... The Creature wasn't lonely anymore. It had a friend now. It had two. And the whole jungle giggled about it all night long.
So it ended with a parade... petals raining like confetti, monkeys drumming on hollow logs slightly out of rhythm, and the whole jungle giggling Isabella's name.
